Jonathan Rea, per la sesta volta consecutiva campione del mondo, qui in sella alla sua Kawasaki ZX-10R nel round di Phillip island.

Il titolo piloti è stato vinto, per il sesto anno consecutivo, dal britannico Jonathan Rea,[1] in sella ad una Kawasaki ZX-10R; alle sue spalle si posiziona Scott Redding, anch'egli britannico, esordiente nel campionato, che in sella alla Ducati Panigale V4 R ottiene cinque vittorie restando in testa alla classifica per alcune gare.

Kawasaki vince nuovamente anche il titolo costruttori surclassando per un solo punto Ducati. Il trofeo indipendenti va all'italiano Michael Ruben Rinaldi, anch'egli pilota Ducati, con il team italiano Go Eleven.[2]

Piloti partecipanti modifica

Tutte le motociclette in competizione sono equipaggiate con pneumatici forniti dalla Pirelli. Contestualmente alla classifica mondiale, vi sono alcuni piloti (indicati in tabella come piloti della "classe IND") che concorrono per il trofeo indipendenti (vi partecipano infatti i piloti dei team che non sono di diretta emanazione di una casa motociclistica).

Calendario modifica

La novità di questo campionato è una gara nuova che si disputa in Catalogna, mentre escono dal calendario le prove di Buriram e Laguna Seca.[3]

A seguito della pandemia di COVID-19, il calendario subisce importanti modifiche: vengono posticipati i round di Jerez, Assen, Aragón, Misano, Magny-Cours e Losail, quest'ultimo a data da destinarsi.[4] Il 14 aprile viene cancellato il round di Imola.[5] Il 7 maggio viene cancellato il round di Oschersleben, che avrebbe dovuto fare il suo rientro nel campionato dopo quindici anni di assenza.[6] Il 24 luglio vengono cancellati i round di Assen, Donington Park e Losail.[7] Il 13 agosto viene annullata la tappa argentina di San Juan.[8] Il 18 agosto viene annunciato che i successivi 17 e 18 ottobre si sarebbe corsa una seconda tappa in Portogallo, sul circuito di Estoril, che sarebbe stata l'ultima prova della stagione. Contemporaneamente, viene definitivamente annullato il round di Misano.[9]
