Wikimedia Foundation Funds Dissemination Committee elections 2015

Voting has begun for eligible voters in the 2015 elections for the Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) and FDC Ombudsperson. Questions and discussion with the candidates for the Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) and FDC Ombudsperson will continue during the voting. Nominations for the Board of Trustees will be accepted until 23:59 UTC May 5.

The Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) makes recommendations about how to allocate Wikimedia movement funds to eligible entities. There are five positions on the committee being filled.

The FDC Ombudsperson receives complaints and feedback about the FDC process, investigates complaints at the request of the Board of Trustees, and summarizes the investigations and feedback for the Board of Trustees on an annual basis. One position is being filled.

The voting phase lasts from 00:00 UTC May 3 to 23:59 UTC May 10. Click here to vote. Questions and discussion with the candidates will continue during that time. GlobalReplace

I've been running GlobalReplace 0.3 to mass-replace some of the highest use raster files across Wikimedia (e.g. File:600px Rosso e Nero.png) but unfortunately my edits on the Italian wiki were reverted and my account blocked for a day for "unauthorised bot", as far as I can tell from my very limited Italian. Does anyone know how I should go about making the edits if not with that tool, or perhaps getting some kind of flag set to enable me to make the edits? There are several templates which are transcluded to several hundred pages each which probably account for most of the uses but I think there are possibly thousands of individual cases as well, so the tool would be incredibly useful and save a lot of time. Wikidata: Access to data from arbitrary items is coming

(Sorry for writing in English)

When using data from Wikidata on Wikipedia and other sister projects, there is currently a limitation in place that hinders some use cases: data can only be accessed from the corresponding item. So, for example, the Wikipedia article about Berlin can only get data from the Wikidata item about Berlin but not from the item about Germany. This had technical reasons. We are now removing this limitation. It is already done for French Wikisource and Dutch Wikipedia. Your project is one of the next ones:

• 18. May: Farsi Wikipedia, English Wikivoyage, Hebrew Wikipedia
• 1. June: Italian Wikipedia, all remaining Wikisource

We hope to have it rolled out nearly everywhere by the end of June 2015.

We invite you to play around with this new feature if you are one of the people who have been waiting for this for a long time. If you have technical issues/questions with this you can come to d:Wikidata:Contact the development team.

A note of caution: Please be careful with how many items you use for a single page. If it is too many pages, loading might get slow. We will have to see how the feature behaves in production to see where we need to tweak and how.

Würde gerne den deutschen Artikel Gran Premio Nuvolari in das italienische Wikipedia erfassen

Ich würde gerne den deutschen Artikel "Gran Premio Nuvolari" in das italienische Wikipedia erfassen, da es sich zwar um eine internationale Veranstaltung handelt, jedoch die Hälfte der Teilnehmer aus Italien kommen und das Rennen auch in Norditalien stattfindet.

Leider finde ich mich im italienischen Wikipedia nicht zurecht. Der Text wurde mir bereits zur Hälfte übersetzt (hefte ich ans Ende der Nachricht), doch bräuchte ich Hilfe bei der restlichen Erstellung des Artikels und bei der Einstellung zur Prüfung.

Pywikibot (then "Pywikipediabot") was started back in 2002. In 2007 a new branch (formerly known as "rewrite", now called "core") was started from scratch using the MediaWiki API. The developers of Pywikibot have decided to stop supporting the compat version of Pywikibot due to bad performance and architectural errors that make it hard to update, compared to core. If you are using pywikibot compat it is likely your code will break due to upcoming MediaWiki API changes (e.g. T101524). It is highly recommended you migrate to the core framework. There is a migration guide, and please contact us if you have any problem.

There is an upcoming MediaWiki API breaking change that compat will not be updated for. If your bot's name is in this list, your bot will most likely break.

Proposal to create PNG thumbnails of static GIF images

The thumbnail of this gif is of really bad quality.

How a PNG thumb of this GIF would look like

There is a proposal at the Commons Village Pump requesting feedback about the thumbnails of static GIF images: It states that static GIF files should have their thumbnails created in PNG. The advantages of PNG over GIF would be visible especially with GIF images using an alpha channel. (compare the thumbnails on the side)

Ik heb via OTRS een melding gehad van Maguire Tax & Legal aangaande de pagina van Mino Raiola. Volgens hen wordt er beweerd dat Mino Raiola de oprichter van het kantoor is. Volgens het ticket is hij alleen een cliënt van het kantoor en geen oprichter. Helaas is mijn kennis van het Italiaans te beperkt om uit de tekst te halen wat de band is tussen Mino Raiola en Maguire Tax & Legal. Dear italian Wikipedians... How would you translate sfumato into English (or Dutch if you might be able to...). I do know what it means in painting, but what is the original meaning of the word. "sfumato" in English is soft, vague. in Italian we often use it as adjective (like "biondo sfumato" for pale blonde hair) or as verb ("l'affare è sfumato" = the deal had gone up in smoke). the word comes from "fumo" (smoke, fume). --valepert 20:24, 8 set 2015 (CEST)

There are two meanings: the first one is the idiom "come up in smoke", the second one is "blurred". The second one is where it comes from the usage in painting: the style invented by Leonardo (the use of thin brushes, lots and lots of coats everytime with a very small amount of paint, in order to hide the various coats of paint and the sign of brushes) has as a common result the flesh of human figures a bit blurred ("sfumato", masculine singular).

Other itwi pages that I have visited, work, and the Città d'Italia displays e.g. in Google Chrome OK. Have not seen anything similar before, odd, at least.

As some of your might be aware, a small group of Wikimedia volunteers have proposed a banner campaign informing Wikipedia readers about the urgent situation of our fellow Wikipedian, open source software developer and Creative Commons activist, Bassel Khartabil. An exemplary banner and an explanatory page have now been prepared, and translated into about half a dozen languages by volunteer translators.

We are seeking your involvement to decide if the global Wikimedia community approves starting a banner campaign asking Wikipedia readers to call on the Syrian government to release Bassel from prison. We understand that a campaign like this would be unprecedented in Wikipedia's history, which is why we're seeking the widest possible consensus among the community.

Given Bassel's urgent situation and the resulting tight schedule, we ask everyone to get involved with the poll and the discussion to the widest possible extent, and to promote it among your communities as soon as possible.

As many of you know, January 15 is Wikipedia’s 15th Birthday!

People around the world are getting involved in the celebration and have started adding their events on Meta Page. While we are celebrating Wikipedia's birthday, we hope that all projects and affiliates will be able to utilize this celebration to raise awareness of our community's efforts.

Haven’t started planning? Don’t worry, there’s lots of ways to get involved. Here are some ideas:

• Join/host an event. We already have more than 80, and hope to have many more.
• Talk to local press. In the past 15 years, Wikipedia has accomplished extraordinary things. We’ve made a handy summary of milestones and encourage you to add your own. More resources, including a press release template and resources on working with the media, are also available.
• Design a Wikipedia 15 logo. In place of a single icon for Wikipedia 15, we’re making dozens. Add your own with something fun and representative of your community. Just use the visual guide so they share a common sensibility.
• Share a message on social media. Tell the world what Wikipedia means to you, and add #wikipedia15 to the post. We might re-tweet or share your message!

Everything is linked on the Wikipedia 15 Meta page. You’ll find a set of ten data visualization works that you can show at your events, and a list of all the Wikipedia 15 logos that community members have already designed.

Password Strength RFC

We have started an RFC on meta to increase password requirements for users that have accounts which can edit MediaWiki:Common.js, have access to checkuser or have access to Oversight.

These types of accounts have sensitive access to our sites, and can cause real harm if they fall into malicious hands. Currently the only requirement is the password is at least 1 letter long. We would like to make the minimum be 8 letters (bytes) long and also ban certain really common passwords.

By increasing requirements on passwords for accounts with high levels of access, we hope to make Wikimedia wikis more secure for everyone. Please read the full text of the proposal here, and make your voice heard at the RFC.

Community Wishlist Survey

Hi everyone,

The 2015 Community Wishlist Survey is over, and now the Community Tech team's work begins on the top 10 features and fixes.

In November and December 2015, we invited contributors from all Wikimedia projects to submit proposals for what they would like the Community Tech team to work on for the purpose of improving or producing curation and moderation tools for active contributors.

634 people participated in the survey, where they proposed, discussed and voted on 107 ideas. There was a two-week period in November to submit and endorse proposals, followed by two weeks of voting. The top 10 proposals with the most support votes now become the Community Tech team's backlog of projects to evaluate and address.

You can see the whole list with links to all the proposals and Phabricator tickets on this page: 2015 Community Wishlist Survey.

For everybody who proposed, endorsed, discussed, debated and voted in the survey, as well as everyone who said nice things to us recently: thank you very much for coming out and supporting live feature development. 2016 WMF Strategy consultation

This consultation will be open, on Meta, from 18 January to 26 February, after which the Foundation will also use these ideas to help inform its Annual Plan. Your input is welcome (and greatly desired) at the Meta discussion, 2016 Strategy/Community consultation.

Apologies for English, where this is posted on a non-English project. We thought it was more important to get the consultation translated as much as possible, and good headway has been made there in some languages. There is still much to do, however! We created m:2016 Strategy/Translations to try to help coordinate what needs translation and what progress is being made. :)

Alessandro Mario

On the wikipedia bio of the Italian actor Alessandro Mario I am trying to connect the title of his movie No God No Master to the wikipedia page of the movie itself, but I don't know how to do it. Basically the title remains in red (notice that Alessandro Mario's page is written in Italian while the film's page is written in English) At the same time if you go to the film's page Alessandro Mario's name is written in red too. How can I connect the actor's page to the movie's page?

I also want to turn 'attore cinematografico' (Film actor) into Attore (simply actor)

I have added two more notes to the page but it looks like there is some problem and they also look red. Somebody can help me to fix them?

Anyhow, I can not find a 'No God, No Master' or 'No God No Master' either in Italian Wikipedia. Where have you seen the film's page (written in English)? Maybe at English Wikpedia en:No God, No Master ?! On that Wikipedia the Alessandro Mario article does not exist at the moment, so the [[Alessandro Mario]] is red.

All those wikilink are written in the right way, you have not to do anything to fix them.

Of course you can write the No God, No Master article in Italian or the en:Alessandro Mario article in English or both, if you want. This is a heads-up note for everyone who gets asked tech questions:

The Ops team is planning a major change to the servers, (very) tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, 22 March 2016. One probable result is that when this happens, all wikis will be in read-only mode for a short time, likely less than 15 minutes for all editors. You will be able to read pages, but not edit them. "All wikis" means all of the WMF wikis, not just the Wikipedias, and it may affect some related sites, such as mw:Wikimedia Labs (including the Tool Labs). There will also be no non-emergency updates to MediaWiki software around that time.

Many details are still being sorted out, but I am asking you to please share the word with your friends and fellow contributors now. This will be mentioned in m:Tech/News (subscribe now! ;-) and through all the other usual channels for Ops, but 99% of editors here don't read this page, and even fewer contributors at other projects will see this note. If you are active in other projects or speak other languages, then please share the news with your fellow contributors at other projects, so that whenever it happens, most people will know that everything should be back online in 10 or 15 minutes.
