This I did, and sent him the writing, in reply to which I received the following letter:— Lower Tugela, 25th March, 1879. Dear Mr. Dunn, — I am much obliged to you for your suggestions regarding the employment of your men as scouts, which will be carried out. After a long talk, during which I explained to him my reason for not wishing to join against the Zulus, he said, Well, Mr. Dunn, I feel sure you can be of much service to me, which, if you will render, you will receive the thanks of Her Majesty's Government, to say nothing of my own personally, but if you do not, you know what will be thought of you for withholding the assistance you can give, and you can expect nothing after the war is over.
