Il cecoslovacco Ivan Lendl ha vinto il suo 3° US Open consecutivo e 6º titolo del Grande Slam battendo in finale lo svedese Mats Wilander per 6(7)–7 6-0 7–6(4) 6-4. I 2 si erano già incontrati in questa stagione nella finale del Roland Garros sempre con la vittoria di Lendl. Ivan riesce a vincere il titolo dopo una gara durata 4 ore e 47 minuti, record storico fino a quell'epoca di durata per una finale giocata allo USTA National Tennis Center, che verrà superata l'anno successivo. Lendl oltre al trofeo si è portato a casa un assegno di 250 000$.[1][2][3]
