Emyr Humphreys (Prestatyn, 15 aprile 1919) è uno scrittore britannico, annoverato tra i principali autori gallesi in lingua inglese[2].
È autore di oltre una ventina di romanzi[2][3], volumi di racconti, poesie, libri di storia e cultura, ecc.[2][3][4] e si è aggiudicato per due volte il premio per il "Libro gallese dell'anno" (Wales Book of the Year)[3]. Il suo romanzo più famoso è A Toy Epic del 1958.[2]
BiografiaModifica
Emyr Humphreys nasce a Prestatyn, nel Galles nord-orientale, il 15 aprile 1919 e frequenta le scuole a Rhyl[3].
Di madrelingua inglese[3], nel 1936 decide di studiare il gallese dopo lo scoppio di una bomba nella penisola di Llŷn[3].
Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, mentre frequenta l'università ad Aberystwyth[2][4], in qualità di obiettore di coscienza, anziché partire per il fronte inizia a lavora in alcune fattorie del Paese[2].
Nel 1946, pubblica il suo primo romanzo, intitolato Little Kingdom.[3]
Nel 1953 vince il Somerset Maugham Award per Hear and Forgive[2][3] e nel 1958 il Premio Hawthornden per A Toy Epic[2][3].
Dal 1972, diventa scrittore a tempo pieno.[4]
Nel 1983 pubblica The Taliesin Tradition: a Quest for the Welsh Identity, un libro dedicato alla storia culturale del Galles.[4]
Nel 1992, il suo romanzo Bonds of Attachment si aggiudica il premio "Libro gallese dell'anno".[3]
Nel 2004, si aggiudica il Premio Siân Phillips per il suo contribuito a radio e televisione.[4]
