Hy is op 25 Maart 1844 in Sagan (Pruise) gebore, en het van 1863 tot 66 in Breslau studeer, waar hy dan tot 1871 onderwyser was, voor hy kurator van die botaniese institute in München geword, en homself in 1872 as privaatdosent bekwaam het. Aldaar het hy 'n reeks plantfamilies vir die “Flora brasiliensis” behartig, benewens ander sistematiek, waaronder die Araceae, en het plantgemeenskappe en hul leefruimtebehoeftes in die Alpe bestudeer. In 1878 word hy ereprofessor in botanie en direkteur van die botaniese tuin te Kiel, en gaan in 1884 in dieselde hoedanigheid as opvolger van Göppert na Breslau, waar hy 'n botaniese instituut stig, en in 1889 na Berlyn. März 1844 in Sagan geboren, studierte er 1863-66 in Breslau, war dan bis 1871 Lehrer daselbst, wurde Kustos der botanischen Anstalten in München und habilitierte sich 1872 als Privatdozent. Hier bearbeitete er eine Reihe von Familien für die “Flora brasiliensis”, lieferte auch andere systematische Arbeiten, namentlich über die Arazeen u. a. und machte in den Alpen studien über die Pflanzenformationen und ihre Existenzbedingungen. 1878 auẞerordentlicher Professor der Botanik und Direktor des Botanischen Gartens in Kiel, ging er 1884 in gleicher Eigenschaft als Nachvolger Göpperts nach Breslau, wo er ein botanisches Institut gründete, 1889 nach Berlin. In Kiel schrieb er sein Hauptwerk: “Versuch einer Entwickelungsgeschichte der Pflanzenwelt, insbesondere der Florengebiete der Tertiärperiode” (2 Bände, Leipzig 1879-82). 1902 unternahm er eine Forschungsreise durch einen Teil Ostafrikas. Born on March 25, 1844 in Sagan, he studied in Breslau from 1863-66, was a teacher there until 1871, became a curator of the botanical institutes in Munich and habilitated in 1872 as a private lecturer. Here he worked on a number of families for the "Flora brasiliensis", also provided other systematic work, notably on the Araceae among others, and studied the plant formations and their conditions of existence in the Alps. In 1878 extraordinary professor of botany and director of the botanical garden in Kiel, he went in 1884 in the same capacity as a successor of Göppert to Wroclaw, where he founded a botanical institute, and in 1889 to Berlin. In Kiel he wrote his main work: "Attempt at a developmental history of the plant world, in particular the floral regions of the Tertiary period" (2 volumes, Leipzig 1879-82). In 1902 he undertook a research trip through a part of East Africa.
