John Edward Gray

John Edward Gray (Walsall, 12 febbraio 1800Londra, 7 marzo 1875) è stato un biologo, zoologo e botanico inglese.

Era il fratello maggiore dello zoologo George Robert Gray, figlio di Samuel Frederick Gray (1766-1828), un farmacologo e botanico famoso alla sua epoca.

Biografia modifica

La sua famiglia si trasferì abbastanza presto a Londra dove Gray cominciò a studiare biologia a 16 anni. Divenne l'assistente di suo padre quando questo redasse The Natural Arrangement of British Plants (1821). Dopo essere stato rifiutato dalla Linnean Society di Londra, abbandonò la botanica per dedicarsi alla zoologia. Dal 1824, iniziò a lavorare nel dipartimento di zoologia del Museo di storia naturale di Londra dove aiuta John George Children alla redazione del catalogo delle collezioni di rettili. Nel 1840, sostituì Children al posto di conservatore di questo dipartimento, funzione che occuperà fino al Natale del 1874.

Pubblicò parecchi cataloghi delle collezioni del museo di storia naturale nei quali analizzò i gruppi animali ma descrisse anche nuove specie. Partecipò attivamente all'arricchimento delle collezioni di zoologia del museo tanto da farlo diventare tra più importanti del mondo. Si stima che un milione di esempi supplementari viene ad aggiungersi alle collezioni durante la direzione di Gray.

Le sue innumerevoli pubblicazioni, circa 1200, mancano di uno studio sistematico e critico. Nel 1832, divenne membro della Royal Society.

Gray si interessò anche alla filatelia. Il primo maggio del 1840, quando il primo Penny Black fu messo in vendita, ne acquistò parecchi esemplari, diventando così il primo filatelico del mondo. Sembra che sia stato uno dei primi a proporre un tasso di affrancamento uniforme per gli invii postali, preparando così l'ideazione del francobollo. Il colonnello William Henry Sykes (1790-1872) gli dedicò in suo onore l'Ardeola grayii della famiglia degli aironi.
