'''The Church of SAN GIOACCHINO'''

The church named “San Gioacchino” (St. Joachim) is located in the town of Colleferro, in the Colleferro Scalo district, opposite the former Valsacco sugar factory.

'''History'''

Construction works started in 1898, after the request to Segni’s bishop, His Excellency Mons. Pancrazio Giorgi, with signatures from about 360 inhabitants of the Scalo district and with the financial support of Pope Leo XIII (Gioacchino Pecci), who contributed with 20-25 thousand liras. The area was donated by the Doria family and a last economic help was offered by the Earl Ludovico Pecci and the Valsacco Company, which took care of the building. Due to the company failure, the construction was stopped until it was taken over and finished in 1925 by the Rocchi enterprise. The latter won the contract with an estimate of 445 thousand liras.

“San Gioacchino” depended on Valmontone’s St. Mary of the Assumption Church until 1924, when it was joint with the Colleferro chaplaincy. Before this year, Father Guglielmo Coluzzi was already present; he was then succeeded by Father Camillo Cavallucci in 1919, stable chaplain in the Segni community as well.

In 1949, “San Gioacchino” became an autonomous parish with its own priest, Father Nicola Fontana.

'''The structure'''

The church has the shape of an octagon, inscribed in a “Greek cross”, which is very visible both  outside and inside.  Moreover, its geometric figure has not only an architectural meaning but also a religious one. In fact eight are the beatitudes in  Matthew’s Gospel and the eighth  is the day of the Lord’s resurrection.

The church is characterized by the harmony and  the equilibrium of  lines and  volumes. The style is purely Romanic with Gothic traits visible in the ribs and in the contrast of the “chiaroscuro” effects. Besides, it is characterized by round arches and solid and compact  masonry masses.

The circular apse, with its hemispherical dome, is today visible only from the outside because ten years ago the restores made a space for the sacristy.

'''Events'''

In the district where the church is located, two religious festivals used to be celebrated on an annual basis: Saint Anthony Abbot and Saint Joachim. The latter took place every 26th July and was deeply felt by the inhabitants of the district, who gathered to admire fireworks and to attend bands, opera concerts, the procession and the solemn mass.
