È importante notare che il governo non viene formato con un voto della Camera dei Comuni, ma semplicemente per una richiesta del monarca e rimane in carica fino a che si ritiene goda della fiducia dei Comuni. La Camera bassa può esplicitare il suo dissenso dal governo respingendo una [[mozione di fiducia]] o approvandone una di [[mozione di sfiducia|sfiducia]]. D'altronde, anche il voto negativo su proposte riguardanti punti basilari del programma e dell'azione di governo (come la legge di bilancio) viene considerato una chiara indicazione del fatto che il governo non gode più della fiducia parlamentare. La Camera dei Comuni ha la prima possibilità di indicare la fiducia al nuovo governo quando vota il [[Discorso del Trono]] (il programma legislativo proposto dal nuovo governo).
