Fino al settembre del [[2011]], il Kosovo era stato formalmente riconosciuto come uno Stato indipendente da '''8687''' dei '''193''' Stati membri delle [[Nazioni Unite]] più [[Taiwan]] e [[Sovrano Militare Ordine di Malta]].
Tre dei quattro Stati confinanti con il Kosovo, ossia l'[[Albania]], il [[Montenegro]] e la [[Repubblica di Macedonia|Macedonia]], lo hanno riconosciuto ufficialmente.
