Al sabato Laffite si migliorò ulteriormente, conquistando la seconda ''pole'' consecutiva. Il francese ruppe anche il pignone del cambio ed ebbe dei problemi all'impianto di alimentazione. In prima fila si confermò [[Patrick Depailler]]: per la prima volta la [[Ligier]] monopolizzò la prima fila di un gran premio.
