Il fenomeno dei supergruppi ebbe una particolare rilevanza nella musica rock degli [[anni 1970|anni settanta]], in cui il virtuosismo tecnico era particolarmente celebrato. In particolare, moltissimi supergruppi nacquero verso la fine del decennio, raccogliendo membri provenienti da grandi complessi ormai prossimi allo scioglimento. Molte ''band'' composte unicamente di virtuosi ebbero vita breve, o addirittura furono create per portare a termine un singolo, specifico progetto.
