Riga 18:
{{quote|''...per, finché ma cento di noi rimangono vivi, mai nessuno di noi in qualsiasi circostanza ci sottometteremo agli Inglesi. È in verità non per la gloria, né per le ricchezze, né per l'onore che noi stiamo combattendo, ma per la libertà - per quello soltanto, che nessun uomo onesto la rifiuti con la sua stessa vita.''}}
La dichiarazione di Arbroath afferma le origini
:{{quote|''Most Holy Father and Lord, we know and from the chronicles and books of the ancients we find that among other famous nations our own, the Scots, has been graced with widespread renown. They journeyed from Greater Scythia by way of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Pillars of Hercules, and dwelt for a long course of time in Spain among the most savage tribes, but nowhere could they be subdued by any race, however barbarous. Thence they came, twelve hundred years after the people of Israel crossed the Red Sea, to their home in the west where they still live today. The Britons they first drove out, the Picts they utterly destroyed, and, even though very often assailed by the Norwegians, the Danes and the English, they took possession of that home with many victories and untold efforts; and, as the historians of old time bear witness, they have held it free of all bondage ever since. Il documento stesso opera due riferimeni,, non strettamente legati al contesto:</br>
* ai barbari (parola di etimologia incerta, di origine semitica per alcuni, da ''Habiru''-Ebreo);
* nel passaggio immediatamente successivo, alla migrazione degli Ebrei dall'Egitto: ciò consente una datazione indiretta anche per la migrazione del popolo scozzese, datazione che poteva essere fatta in altro modo, direttamente riportando il secolo, oppure con il riferimento a uno dei 130 regnanti di cui si accenna in seguito.
