Il premio fu istituito nel [[1996]], ed è considerato uno dei più prestigiosi premi per l'architettura nel [[Regno Unito]]. È pubblicizzato come l'equivalente per l'architettura del [[Booker Prize|Premio Booker]] e del [[Turner Prize|Premio Turner]].
