Seabury Grandin Quinn (Washington, 1º gennaio 1889 – 24 dicembre 1969) è stato uno scrittore statunitense.

Cresciuto a Washington, frequentò la facoltà di legge della National University, laureandosi nel 1910. Prestò servizio militare durante la prima guerra mondiale e successivamente divenne editore di un gruppo di giornali in New York: cominciò così con lo scrivere articoli di medicina legale, materia nella quale era specializzato, e di giurisprudenza, cimentandosi più tardi anche nella "pulp fiction", con ottimi risultati.

La sua prima pubblicazione fu il racconto "The Law of the Movie", apparso sul numero dicembre 1917 di The Motion Picture Magazine (anche se il suo racconto "Painted Gold" fu scritto prima); "Demons of the Night" fu pubblicato su Detective Story Magazine il 19 marzo 1918; seguì "Was She Mad?", pubblicato il 25 marzo dello stesso anno. Nel 1919 venne pubblicato "The Stone Image". Nei suoi trentuno anni di attività, si alternò con successo tra il mestiere di avvocato e quello di scrittore. Se si eccettuano le prime collaborazioni con pulp magazines, fu uno degli autori più presenti su Weird Tales. Tale costanza venne premiata con la pubblicazione di ben 143 racconti (record rimasto ineguagliato).

Di questi ben 93 fanno parte del Ciclo di Jules de Grandin, indagatore dell'incubo che, con il suo assistente Dr. Trowbridge, riprendono la coppia Holmes-Watson, ma in un contesto soprannaturale. Il primo racconto delle avventure di de Grandin, “Terror on the Links”, apparve sul numero di Weird Tales dell'ottobre 1925 (noto anche come “Horror on the Links”). Nel 1937 ritornò a Washington come rappresentante di una catena di giornali commerciali e là, successivamente, divenne avvocato statale per la durata della seconda guerra mondiale. Per tutta la vita alternò l'attività legale a quella giornalistica.

Il suo primo romanzo, Roads (un'originale e sorprendente storia di Santa Claus, dedotta dalle originali leggende cristiane), fu pubblicato dalla Arkham House nel 1948. La professione di scrittore fu sempre secondaria alla sua carriera di avvocato specializzato in giurisprudenza mortuaria. Egli insegnò questa materia alle scuole di polizia mortuaria per molti anni, e per circa 15 anni fu il redattore di Casket & Sunnyside, un giornale commerciale di materia legale. Morì a Washington il 24 dicembre 1969.

Dieci storie di Jules de Grandin sono state raccolte nell'antologia The Phantom Fighter, pubblicata dalla casa editrice Mycroft & Moran (col permesso della casa editrice Arkham House) nel 1966. Un'antologia delle storie di Seabury Quinn è Night Creatures, edita da Peter Ruber per Ash-Tree Press nel 2003. Seabury Quinn fu contemporaneo di scrittori quali Robert E. Howard, H. P. Lovecraft e Clark Ashton Smith e utilizzò spesso lo pseudonimo di Jerome Burke. Le storie pubblicate sotto tale pseudonimo sono state riproposte sul periodico di imbalsamazione Dodge per molti anni.

Il ciclo di Jules de Grandin modifica

Jules de Grandin è il padrone del genere investigatore privato dell'occulto. De Grandin e il suo compagno, il Dott. Trowbridge, vivono a Harrisonville, nello stato di New York, una strana città infestata da mostri, scienziati malvagi, e da ogni tipo di strani fenomeni soprannaturali. Le storie di de Grandin apparvero solamente su Weird Tales, dove furono molto popolari, rivaleggiando con quelle di Conan the Cimmerian (di Robert E. Howard) e dei Cthulhu Mythos (di H. P. Lovecraft).
