nd, nothingmore discriminating or concise can be said than iscontained in these sentences of the historian of theReformation in Italy: Of all the Italian exiles noneleft behind him a fairer and better-earned fame thanPeter Martyr. He possessed eminently the goodqualities of his countrymen without the vices whichhave been ascribed to them; acuteness withoutsubtlety, ardour without enthusiasm, and dexteritywithout cunning. His piety and learning wererecommended by modesty, candour, and gentle-ness of manners. As an author his talents wereallowed by his adversaries, and in the ReformedChurch his writings were by general agreementplaced next to those of Calvin for judiciousnessand perspicuity. His last years were spent happilyin the most uninterrupted harmony and cordialfriendship with his colleagues in Zurich. Bul-linger, who loved him as a brother, closed his eyes,and Conrad Gesner spread the cloth over his face,while the pastor and elders of the Locarnian Churchwept around his bed. 126

JOSIAH SIMLER. Josiah Simler (Josias Simlerus) IN the closing years of his life Peter Martyrhad for colleague in the theological chairat Zurich this Josiah Simler.Simler was born at Cappel in 1530. Hisfather had been prior in a convent, and wasesteemed a godly, learned, and prudent man.Embracing the Reformation Faith, he abandonedmonasticism and entered the state of wedlock.When Josiah was fourteen years of age he wassent to neighbouring Zurich to complete hiseducation, and while there he lived in the houseof his godfather, Henry Bullinger, a daughter ofwhom subsequently became his first wife. Foruniversity training young Simler went to Basleand then to Strasburg. On the completion of hisstudies he occupied himself with teaching andpreaching, first in his native town and thereafter 127 Bezas Portraits of Reformers at Zurich, where in course of time he was ap-pointed deacon.
