McClellan, was sent into that region.McClellan set to work at once to drive theConfederates out of West Virginia, and onthe third of June a portion of his command,under General Kelly, defeated GeneralGarnett at Philippi. McClellan now advanced ADMINISTRATION OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN. 6;$ against the main body of Garnetts forces.On the eleventh of July, he attacked the com-mand of Colonel Pegram at Rich Mountain,and defeated it. This defeat compelled Gen-eral Garnett to fall back towards the valleyof Virginia. He was pursued by McClellanand overtaken at Carricks ford, on the Cheatriver. In the battle which ensued here, Gar- mander, Colonel Ellsworth, was killed by acitizen. Strong defences were erected onthe Virginia shore between Washington andAlexandria, and the army was encampedwithin these lines.
