f surrender arrived,and were accompanied by a largenumber of noted rebel officers.The large veranda and yard infront was soon filled with groupsof Union and rebel officers inearnest conversation. Half theregulars on either side foundsome old acquaintance or WestPoint classmate among the others,and in many instances the greet-ings were warm and unaffected.The men who but the day beforewere seeking each others destruc-tion now chatted quietly together,recalled the incidents of the pastand gave in their open counten-ances evidences of honest re-spect. Under a heading Souvenirs ofFreedom is a list of rebel souve-nirs abandoned during one of thebattles. Among them were a sur-geons sash, letters, pitols andsabres, and the most stupendousstory of all is tinding a twentydollar gold piece. If the confed-eracy is not ruined one man in itcertainly is by the loss of thismuch of auriferous metal.
