CHAPTER V From the Fall of the Scaligers to thePresent Day npHE head of the house of Visconti at the momentwhen Verona was added to the duchy of Milanwas Gian Galeazzo, one of the most treacherous andambitious tyrants of his age. In the league formedbetween him, the Republic of Venice, and the Carraresiof Padua, it had been arranged that Verona should beceded to the Visconti, and Vicenza to Padua. Thiscompact was now carried out, though Gian Galeazzoby guile and force soon after wrested Vicenza from itsdestined owner. At Verona the princely system ofbuilding carried on so grandly by the Scaligers wasstill maintained. The fortifications already existinground the town were renewed ; the castles of S. Pietroand S. Felice (this latter sometimes known as Castel-nuovo) were erected by order of the lord of Milan,who doubtless hoped in this way to ingratiate himselfwith the Veronese besides providing for his own safety.Gian Galeazzo did not however win the love of hisnew subjects, who, though
