De E3-serie wordt zelden gebruikt, behalve voor sommige elektronicacomponenten met grote variaties zoals [[condensator]]en met extreem hoge waarden (>1 [[Farad (eenheid)|farad]]), waarbij de opgegeven tolerantie niet gebalanceerd is, zoals: −30/+50% of −20/+80%. Dit geldt ook bij componenten met minder kritische waarden zoals bij [[smoorspoel]]en.

Vanaf de E48-serie werd een derde decimale positie toegevoegd en zijn de waarden enigszins aangepast.
