Nell'ottobre del 1927 il direttore [[Nikolai Malko]] contattò [[Dmitri Shostakovich]] per avere un arrangiamento del pezzo della durata di 45 minuti. Il suo ''Tea for Two'', Opera 16, fu eseguito per la prima volta il 25 novembre 1928.

This enchanting piece is the result of a joke. Some friends of the composer played him Tea for Two on a gramophone and allowed him to listen to it one time only. S was then given pen and paper and locked in a room along with the instruction to write down an orchestral arrangement within 30 minutes. He succeeded in writing this within 20 minutes..
