Storia

L'etichetta fu fondata nel 1993 da Steve Barrow, Bob Harding, Mick Hucknall, Elliot Rashman and Andy Dodd con lo scopo di ripubblicare dischi di roots reggae, dub e DJ con particolare attenzione all'alta fedeltà tipica della ripubblicazione di album jazz. Insieme alle altre etichette discografiche quali Pressure Sounds, Motion Records, Soul Jazz e Auralux l'etichetta ha subito guadagnato l'attenzione di critica e pubblico specializzato in virtù della qualità delle sue pubblicazioni.

Le prime uscite hanno coperto la musica di metà anni settanta con produzioni di Bunny Lee, Yabby You e Glen Brown ma hanno visto anche la riscoperta di classici quali Heart of the Congos dei Congos (prodotto da Lee "Scratch" Perry e non più reperibile in commercio da molti anni) e il triplo CD di Big Youth Natty Universal Dread 1973-1979.

Accanto alla ripubblicazione di vecchi album, l'etichetta ha anche provveduto a realizzare due album one-riddim, ovvero album composti da canzoni basate sullo stesso riddim: Tree of Satta (nel 2003) basata sull'originale riddim Satta Massagana, un misto di vecchi e nuovi brani insiem ealla versione originale del brano a cura degli Abyssinians. Il secondo, Fisherman Style (del 2006), utilizza il riddim Fisherman dei Congos e presenta nuovi brani da vari cantanti tra i quali Horace Andy, U-Roy, Big Youth, Luciano, Tony Tuff e Dillinger.

Il sound system

L'etichetta ha anche un sound system che presenta artisti giamaicani come Dilinger, Trinity, Ranking Joe, U Brown, Horace Andy, Dennis Alcapone, U-Roy, Spikey Tee, Country Culture, Raggamonica. Nel luglio 2006 il sound system ha fatto una tournée di tre date in Giappone insieme alla leggenda del reggae U-Roy facendo segnare ovunque il tutto esaurito.

La chiusura

Nel 2007 Blood and Fire ha chiuso i battenti, anche se non c'è mai stata una comunicazione ufficiale in tal senso, a causa della perdita del loro distributore americano e di alcune decisioni manageriali sfortunate, insieme alla recessione delle vendite a livello mondiale.
