«For me, as for many others, the reading of detective stories is an addiction like tobacco or alcohol. The symptoms of this are: Firstly, the intensity of the craving-if I have any work to do, I must be careful not to get hold of a detective story for, once I begin one, I cannot work or sleep till I have finished it. Secondly, its specificity-the story must conform to certain formulas (I find it verydifficult, for example, to read one that is not set in rural England). And, thirdly, its immediacy. I forget the story as soon as I have finished it, and have no wish to read it again. If, as sometimes happens, I start reading one and find after a few pages that I have read it before, I cannot go on. Such reactions convince me that, in my case at least, detective stories have nothing to do with works of art. It is possible, however, that an analysis of the detective story, i.e., of the kind of detective story I enjoy, may throw light, not only on its magical function, but also, by contrast, on the function of art.»
«Per me, come per molti altri, la lettura delle detective stories è come una dipendenza da alcol o tabacco. I sintomi sono: innanzitutto l’intensità del desiderio di lettura- se ho un lavoro da svolgere devo stare attento a non iniziare una detective storie, una volta iniziata non posso lavorare o dormire fino a quando non la finisco. Secondariamente la sua specificità – la storia deve rispondere a certe formule (Trovo davvero difficile, per esempio, leggerne una non ambientata nell’Inghilterra rurale). E come terzo sintomo, la sua immediatezza. Mi dimentico la storia appena la finisco e non provo il desiderio di rileggerla. Se, come a volte succede, comincio a leggerne una e capisco dopo poche pagine che l’ho già letta, non posso andare avanti. Reazioni di questo tipo mi fanno capire che, almeno nel mio caso, le detective stories non hanno nulla a che vedere con opere d’arte. E’ possibile tuttavia, che un’analisi di un tipo di detective storie che mi appassiona porti luce, non solo sulle sue magiche funzioni, ma anche, per contrasto, sulla funzione dell’arte.»
