In the southern part of Brugherio's municipality, on the border with Cologno Monzese, there is Cascina Guzzina (in dialect Guscina). The name comes from gussetta, which formerly designated the cocoon of the silkworm,[1] whose breeding was widespread in the area. In the varied set of agricultural complexes known as agricultural courts, which once held a renowned agricultural activity, there are now civilian residences and businesses.

Architecture modifica

The complex, which already existed in the sixteenth century, retains the typical characteristics of rural architecture.[1] The entrance to the farm is located west on Via Guzzina and features a turret above itself. Moving a few feet to the south there is the small church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, whose profile stands just along the perimeter wall that borders the building complex. The lintel of the front door bears an commemorating inscription Virgin Mary. On the south side of the building it is detached less wing which houses the modest architecture of a small convent built in ancient times by the Capuchin friars.[2] To the north instead, on Via Volturno, the is the entrance of the garden villa built by the noble De Capitani from Vimercate in the eighteenth century.[1] It has a U-shape and is placed inside, almost at the center, of the farm.

History modifica

The census of 1530, at the beginning of the Spanish domination, shows that the area of the farm belonged to the Court of Monza and Milan and it was extended for 650 poles (NOTAapproximately 43 hectares). The owners were Galeazzo Alfieri and the prosecutor Francesco Pagano. When St. Charles Borromeo, archbishop of Milan, founded the parish of St. Bartholomew in Brugherio, 15 June 1578, Cascina Guzzina was in the territory administrate by the new parish. The documents in the pastoral visit of 15 November 1646 shows that the Vicar Foraneo visited Church of St. Bartholomew, the Guzzina, the oratory of Santa Maria degli Angeli, then dedicated to St. Andrew, belonged to the superintendent and Senator Andrea Alfieri. A great owner of the farm was Count Giuseppe De Capitani from Vimercate.[3] It is written in an ancient chronicle that in the farm there were the most experienced farmers and its funds were known for its excellent wine production.[2] The Sommarione of 1751 inside Cadastre Teresian lists other small owners of the land, such as the Sisters of St. Ursula, family Pestagalli, Marquis Silva, Count Scotti and Count Litta. Following the administrative reform implemented by the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria in 1769, Cascina Guzzina was annexed officially to the closest and most important Moncucco's municipality. Subsequently, Moncucco, became part of the municipality of Brugherio established by Royal Decree on December 9, 1866. In Sommarioni maps inside Cadastre Lombardo-Veneto of the year 1871 are cited the noble Perego de Cremnago that use it as holiday home and own the private chapel dedicated in that period to the Magi, farmhouses and extensive grounds.[3] For inheritance in the female line, these properties passed to the counts Venino.[2]
