Smart Air is a social enterprise headquartered in Beijing, China, that focuses on manufacturing medical equipment, specifically air purifiers and filters. It was established in 2013 by Thomas Talhelm. Smart Air's mission is to offer cost-effective and efficient air purification solutions to address indoor air pollution, aiming to enhance the quality of living environments. The organization is recognized for pioneering the development of affordable do-it-yourself (DIY) air purifiers.

History

modifica

In January 2013, PhD student Thomas Talhelm noticed the high prices of air purifiers and sought a cost-effective[1] solution. He constructed an air purifier by attaching a HEPA filter to a fan and conducted tests using a particle counter, documenting his findings on his blog, Particle Counting[2].

«I saw a problem that needed to be fixed.»

Talhelm's DIY air purifier attracted media attention and was featured in multiple magazines. Encouraged by the Beijing Energy Network, he began organizing DIY[3] workshops to teach others how to replicate his method. In August 2013, Talhelm and associates held their first workshop in Beijing, introducing their innovation to a global audience.

Responding to participants' challenges in sourcing suitable fans and reliable HEPA filters, Talhelm and his colleagues established Smart Air as a social enterprise. The company aims to provide affordable air purification solutions by distributing fans and filters globally.

Since its establishment, Smart Air has focused on manufacturing straightforward, functional air purifiers and providing free education and resources on air pollution through its unique social enterprise model. The organization directs its efforts and revenues towards expanding global access to clean air, prioritizing impact over financial gain.
