Hi, Rocco! Thanks for writing!

Can you please tell me what the article is about that you intend to illustrate with my artwork? I'm afraid it isn't clear to me in your letter below.

Thanks,

Todd

Okay, I can be dense, sometimes …

Are you touching up articles about ME? If so, then of course you have my permission. My English language page (started by a friend) is similarly in need of a professional hand to guide it, something I, myself, have neither knowledge nor time to address. If some of your documentation could be used to aid the English page, too, that would be truly outstanding.

Thanks in advance,

Todd Lockwood

Bozza di risposta modifica

Sorry for the misunderstanding. It’s my fault, I was so concentrate to write in English what we would like, that I forgot to write why we asked for your images.

We would like to use your artworks to illustrate the articles about D&D and other games (like Magic: the Gathering) - obviously an article about you would be a plus. In Italian legislation there is not a concept like the "fair use" used on the English wikipedia, so all images must be either free of copyright or explicitly authorized from the copyright owner.

I wrote to you because you are one of the main illustrator for D&D 3a, your works was used in many fantasy rpg, books and tgcc products and on your website you said that you can give permission to use your images for non commercial use.

If you gave your permission please note that images released as Cc-by-nc-sa-2.5-it can be used by third part without asking directly for permission (if they are used for non commercial use). If you are not comfortable with this, please specify that images must be used only on Italian wikipedia..

About your page on the English wikipedia I started to fix the evident formatting problems. There are to many external links instead of internal link to other wikipedia articles, and it's not formatted in wikipedia style (normally there are section like "Works" with a list of works, and "Awards" with a list of awards, but these are description of the works/awards (when/where/why they were published/assigned and other information, not external links to the works). But I'm not so good in English to add new material in good English.

I’m very sorry for my previous error and I hope you gave your permission to use your artwork.

Condizioni d'uso modifica

Thank you very much for asking. The web has opened up new avenues for copyright abuse, and artists have to be vigilant to protect what is theirs. I have had to close down more than one site that was using my artwork-- and the artwork of many friends of mine in the industry-- inappropriately.

You may display anything that you find on my site, so long as you are sure to credit me, and include appropriate copyright info on or near or "asterisked" to the art. The correct copyright info is included with the piece on my web site. Also, please note prominently that the art is "used by permission of Todd Lockwood" or, "Used by Permission of Wizards of the Coast", or whoever is the correct owner of that piece. You may not crop, trim, flop, lay text over, or in any other way alter the artwork from what you see on my own page. Don't cut my artwork up for banners, character portraits, sidebars, tubes, "avatars", or any other graphic usage. You may not put the artwork in print--"hardcopy." In short, the only kind of usage I allow is an online gallery-type presentation. If you use detail shots from my website, refer to the entire image in your text linkage and note that it is a detail. For example: Detail from "Angel" (link to full image) ©Todd Lockwood, used by permission.

My artwork may not be sold, given away, added to or used in any sort of e-stationary, cards, or other such works, regardless of whether they are to be given away or sold. If your site intends to sell or otherwise market images owned by Todd Lockwood or Wizards of the Coast or others, or in any other way generate profit from their use, directly or indirectly, permission is denied. I hope you will understand the necessity of this position. It would be wise of you to make the same notation on your own site in a prominent location, as this is the most common sort of misuse of copyright.

Finally, please provide a link back to my site. Ideally, the link would be directly associated with the usage of the artwork.

Please do not use my domain as the source for your image file; I can NOT afford to pay for the bandwidth of everybody who would like to link to my site every time someone clicks their buttons. Copy the image to your own site.

Keep this letter as proof of permission. If I see your site later on, and contact you about it, this is your proof that I okayed it. Otherwise, I will likely ask you to remove all artwork.

Thanks again!
