The church Santa Maria di Jaddico is Located in Brindisi on SS 379 north of the city. The present church was built between 1963 and 1965 and incorporates within it a wall of an older church, attributed to the Canons of the Holy Sepulchre.

On this wall is portrayed a Madonna tenderly wrapping the Child in her arms, while with her left hand she firmly holds a rooster.

In 1962 and 1963 there were Marian apparitions on the wall, which later led to the construction of the same church.

Hisotry

modifica

On the night of August 11, 1962, Theodore D'Amici, a 50-year-old traffic policeman, married and father of three, known for his gruff and unsociable nature, had visions. In these visions, he heard a female voice that he identified as that of the Virgin Mary. She invited him to go to a place outside the city, specifically to the Jaddico district. In that place, a faded fresco depicting the Virgin Mary, holding the baby Jesus at her breast and holding a rooster with her other hand, is still visible.

This area was poorly frequented due to the widespread presence of thickets and swamping in the coastal strip between Brindisi and Monopoli. In spite of this, a path was created along what is now the Adriatic highway, connecting the two centers via the consular Barbaric road.

This intervention led to the reconsideration of a church by then reduced to ruins. Thanks to the visions reported by D'Amici, reconstruction was undertaken in 1965, with the laying of the foundation stone. The blessing ceremony of the sanctuary was presided over by Armando Franco. On May 27, 1970, the marble statue of the Immaculate Conception from the Puliti workshop in Pietra Santa was uncovered, thus enriching the shrine with the addition of a bell tower. The present church was built between 1963 and 1965, integrating a wall from the old church into its interior.

Church structure

modifica

Six columns are erected on the front of the church, topped by distinctive ornaments; a pitched roof surmounts these, at the center of which is a marble statue of moderate size.

Above the main roof rises an additional pitched roof of reduced size and distinctive in shape from the first. This roof, raised above the first, adorned with a central stained glass window.

On top of this, a small elevation rises, almost forming a mini tower, culminating in the presence of a cross.

Inside, there is a single room with a central nave, ending with an altar with a now richly vegetated wall with behind it adorned with a fresco depicting the virgin with Jesus in her arms.

Behind the main altar, dominant with its fresco, another part of the room opens up, where three frescoes unfold on a wall depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus in her arms, testifying to the deep spirituality and devotion that permeates this sacred place.
