Storia dell'azienda

L'etichetta, specializzata nella pubblicazione di musica giamaicana, è stata fondata nel 1981 da Bill Nowlin e Duncan Brown, entusiasti appassionati di musica di reggae. La prima uscita dell'etichetta fu una riedizione del disco di Linton Kwesi Johnson Dread Beat an' Blood (1981).

Nel 1983, Chris Wilson iniziò a lavorare per l'etichetta e grazie a lui cominciò la collaborazione della etichetta discografica con Clement Dodd, il fondatore della storica label giamaicana Studio One che permise l'uscita del disco Best of Studio One, una raccolta di musica prodotta da Dodd di artisti quali Dennis Brown, Alton Ellis, The Gladiators, Marcia Griffiths, The Heptones, Slim Smith, Sugar Minott e Johnny Osbourne.

Heartbeat ha finora pubblicato oltre 60 album della Studio One; l'etichetta ha i diritti di pubblicazione della musica di un gran numero di produttori giamaicani, tra i quali Lee Perry, Joe Gibbs, Sonia Pottinger, Clancy Eccles, Alvin Ranglin, Duke Reid, Niney the Observer, Sly & Robbie, Steelie & Clevie e Lloyd Daley.

Nel 1996 l'etichetta ha finanziato il Heartbeat Culture Splash Tour, tour che ha girato gli Stati Uniti con Michael Rose, Sister Carol, The Meditations e Derrick Morgan. Nel 2000, Heartbeat Records ha ricevuto un Premio Grammy per il disco di Burning Spear Calling Rastafari (1999).
