Il box set fu graficamente ideato da Mark London come fosse un annuario scolastico del liceo. Il cofanetto include brani che spaziano in tutta la carriera della band, comprese outtake, demo, B-sides, rarità, versioni alternative, e oltre 60 tracce precedentemente inedite.[1]

«La storia che volevamo raccontare con questa raccolta antologica era l'intenzione di andare oltre qualsiasi stereotipo sui Beach Boys, il più possibile. Come band hanno prodotto tantissimo materiale diverso, spesso incompatibile stilisticamente. Fa veramente "uscire fuori di testa" pensare che lo stesso gruppo di persone che ha prodotto canzoncine ballabili e commerciali come Surfin' Safari, abbia anche prodotto cose come God Only Knows e SMiLE o Surf's Up e Holland, e tutto quel tipo di musica più adulta. C'era un sacco di talento in quel gruppo e ognuno della band ha portato qualcosa di singolare e importante alla trama della storia dei Beach Boys. Volevamo davvero stupire la gente per il fatto che questa band era incredibilmente versatile.»

Originariamente annunciato per il 2012, insieme alla compilation Fifty Big Ones, l'uscita del box set venne posticipata. Nella primavera 2013 fu confermata la pubblicazione per il mese di agosto, e l'11 giugno, furono rivelate la grafica e la lista dei brani.[4][5]

Particolare attenzione nel contenuto del cofanetto antologico è stata dedicata a canzoni inedite dei fratelli Dennis e Carl Wilson. Nello specifico, l'inclusione nella compilation del brano (Wouldn't It Be Nice to) Live Again, composto da Dennis e scartato durante le sessioni del 1971 per l'album Surf's Up, fu particolarmente pubblicizzata.

Per promuovere l'album, venne data ai fan l'opportunità di contribuire alla produzione di un video musicale per la precedentemente inedita California Feelin', via Tongal.[6] Lo stesso servizio offriva anche la possibilità agli appassionati di fornire una traccia di chitarra solista al brano Goin' to the Beach che ne era sprovvisto,[7] e il vincitore del concorso, oltre a una chitarra in regalo, avrebbe visto la sua performance inclusa nella traccia mixata da Mark Linett e Alan Boyd.[8]
