Il lavoro più famoso di Gower è il ritratto di Elisabetta I detto "''Armada portrait''": è stato eseguito per commemorare la vittoria sull'[[Invincibile Armada]] [[Spagna|spagnola]] nel [[1588]] ed è attualmente conservato nell'[[Abbazia di Woburn]]. Una copia di minori dimensioni, conservata nella ''National Portrait Gallery'', è attribuita anch'essa a Gower; la versione detta "Drake" è invece di altri<ref>Hearn, p. 43; Strong 1969</ref>.
