La sua posizione in seno al [[Governo federale degli Stati Uniti]] è analoga a quella dei ministri delle finanze dei governi di altri paesi.
 
Il Segretario è un membro del [[Gabinetto di governo|Gabinetto]] del [[Presidente degli Stati Uniti d'America|Presidente]] e, a partire dagli anni della presidenza [[Bill Clinton|Clinton]], fa parte del [[National Security Council|Consiglio per la Sicurezza Nazionale]].
