Biografia
modificaIn giovane età inizia lo studio del pianoforte, per poi dirottare verso la chitarra, studiando, fra gli altri, con Pat Martino. Intraprende presto lo studio del basso elettrico, che porta avanti in parallelo a quello della chitarra, ma rapidamente decide di focalizzarsi sullo studio del basso:
“Continuai a suonare la chitarra e il basso fino al 1968, quando fui costretto ad ammettere che la mia attività di chitarrista doveva essere serenamente eliminata.”
Contrabass Guitar
modificaAnthony Jackson è famoso, oltre che per la sua vasta discografia, anche per aver inventato il Basso Elettrico a 6 corde, o come lui preferisce chiamarlo, il Contrabass Guitar, accordato con la seguente accordatura: B E A D G C.
“Perché le quattro corde sono lo standard e non le sei corde? Come membro della famiglia delle chitarre dai toni più bassi, lo strumento avrebbe dovuto avere sei corde fin dall'inizio. La sola ragione per cui ne ebbe quattro fu che Leo Fender stava pensando in termini applicativi a un contrabbasso, ma lo costruì sulla falsariga della chitarra perché quello prevedeva la sua formazione professionale. La concezione logica del basso contempla sei corde.”[1]
Il primo progetto nasce nel 1974 in collaborazione con Carl Thompson, noto liutaio di New York, ma in seguito ad alcuni prototipi non corrispondenti alle richieste di Anthony Jackson, il progetto si blocca, per poi riprendere nel 1981 in collaborazione con Ken Smith.
Attualmente Anthony Jackson collabora e suona bassi di Fodera Guitars, avendo un proprio modello signature, il Fodera AJ Presentation II
