La scena [[breakbeat hardcore]] dei primi anni '90 iniziò a frammentarsi nel 1992/1993, con diverse influenze che divennero meno comuni insieme nelle tracce. Il pianoforte e lo stile vocale in crescente che prevalevano nel breakbeat hardcore iniziarono a gettare le basi della musica [[happy hardcore]], mentre brani con campioni a tema "scuro" emersero dalla fine del 1992 e chiamati darkcore. Con l'evolversi del genere si iniziò a preferire il termine [[drum and bass]], che insieme al neonato [[tekno]] racchiuse in sé tutte le tendenze della nuova musica da rave. Sul finire degli [[Anni 1990|anni novanta]] l'enorme diversificarsi dei sottogeneri della [[drum and bass]] portò alla necessità di individuare termini che indicassero in modo più o meno univoco un determinato stile; in questo contesto il termine "jungle" ricominciò ad essere utilizzato per indicare la d'n'b delle origini, e contemporaneamente una particolare forma di d'n'b dalle basi molto più veloci e sincopate con cantato [[raggamuffin]].
 
Durante il 1992 e il 1993, le espressioni ''jungle techno'' e ''hardcore jungle'' proliferarono per descrivere quel passaggio della musica dal breakbeat hardcore alla jungle. Il ''sound'' fu sostenuto in club come AWOL, Roast e Telepathy, da DJ come DJ Ron, [[DJ Hype]], Mickey Finn, DJ Dextrous e Kenny Ken e dalle etichette discografiche Moving Shadow, V Recordings, Suburban Base e Renk,<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.theransomnote.com/music/gone-rave/gone-to-a-rave43-the-untold-story-of-renk-incredible/|title=Gone To A Rave#43: The Untold Story Of Renk Records|work=The Ransom Note|date=5 April 2017}}</ref> e su stazioni radio pirata come Kool FM (considerata la stazione più strumentale nello sviluppo di jungle) ma anche Don FM, Rush e Rude FM.
A volte il cantante è un [[Master of Ceremonies|MC]] presente nei liveset e parte attiva del "gruppo", ma generalmente i djset sono costituiti da remix di brani [[reggae]] già esistenti rielaborati su beat d'n'b. Oltre che jungle questo sottogenere può essere indicato anche come "new jungle" o "raggajungle", per distinguerla dal vecchio significato del termine.
