Progettato come reazione ottimistica alle musiche del precedente Fables of the Reconstruction, gli R.E.M. scelgono il nuovo produttore Don Gehman al quale affidare le canzoni, il quale li porta negli studi di Belmont, nello stato dell'Indiana.
