modificaMatthews fece il suo debutto per l'UFC il 28 giugno 2014, quando affrontò il nuovo arrivato Dashon Johnson all'evento UFC Fight Night 43.[1] Il lottatore australiano vinse il match via sottomissione al terzo round.[2]
Nel suo secondo incontro all'interno dell'UFC, sfidò Vagner Rocha l'8 novembre a UFC Fight Night 55.[3] Matthews vinse il match tramite sottomissione alla seconda ripresa.[4]
Il 10 maggio 2015 combatté James Vick a UFC Fight Night 65,[5] venendo sconfitto per la prima volta in carriera tramite sottomissione al primo round.[6]
Avrebbe dovuto affrontare Mickael Lebout il 18 luglio all'evento UFC Fight Night 72.[7] Tuttavia, Matthews si ritirò una decina di giorni prima della sfida a causa di un infortunio e venne sostituito dal debuttante Teemu Packalen.[8]
Matthews affrontò Akbarh Arreola il 15 novembre all'evento UFC 193.[9] Il giovane lottatore vinse l'incontro per interruzione al termine del secondo round, dopo aver portato l'avversario a terra e averne bersagliato l'occhio destro con numerosi pugni e gomitate nel corso dei minuti precedenti.[10]
Tornò sull'ottagono il 20 marzo 2016 per combattere Johnny Case a UFC Fight Night 85.[11] L'australiano si impose via sottomissione alla terza ripresa dopo un match combattuto.[12] Entrambi i contendenti ricevettero inoltre il bonus Fight of the Night.[13]
A luglio avrebbe dovuto affrontare Stevie Ray all'evento finale della ventitreesima stagione del reality show The Ultimate Fighter. Tuttavia, Ray venne rimosso dalla card il 2 giugno per infortunio e sostituito da Kevin Lee. Dopo 4 minuti dall'inizio dell'incontro, Matthews venne portato al tappeto e finalizzato dal suo avversario con il ground and pound, perdendo così l'incontro per KO tecnico.
Il 27 novembre affronta Andrew Holbrook all'evento UFC Fight Night: Whittaker vs. Brunson, perdendo l'incontro per decisione non unanime.
