Brian Joseph McCook, noto anche con lo pseudonimo di Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolodchikova oppure semplicemente come Katya (Boston, 1º maggio 1982), è un comico, attore e drag queen statunitense, nota soprattutto per aver partecipato alla settima stagione di RuPaul's Drag Race, durante la quale si è classificata al quinto posto e ha vinto il titolo di Miss Congeniality. Successivamente, è stata finalista della seconda edizione di RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars..

Katya Zamolodchikova nel 2015

Insieme a Trixie Mattel, anche lei concorrente di RuPaul's Drag Race, conduce lo show UNHhhh, una web serie sul canale YouTube della World of Wonder, con oltre 52 milioni di visualizzazioni a luglio 2020.[1][2] Nel 2017 e nel 2018, ha co-condotto The Trixie and Katya Show su Viceland.[1][2]

Biografia modifica

I primi anni modifica

Nato da Pat[3] e Dan McCook,[4] con un fratello maggiore e una sorella minore,[5] McCook ha origini irlandesi ed è cresciuto in una famiglia cattolica. McCook è cresciuto a Marlborough, nel Massachusetts, e si è diplomato alla Marlborough High School nel 2000. In un'intervista del 2019, McCook ha descritto la sua crescita come "noiosa e ordinaria".[6] Ha poi frequentato l'Università di Boston per un anno prima di trasferirsi al Massachusetts College of Art and Design, dove ha studiato video e performance art nel programma "Studio for Interrelated Media" e seguendo psicologia come corso secondario. È qui che McCook si è interessato per la prima volta all'arte drag.[7][8]

Inizio carriera modifica

McCook ha creato il personaggio della drag russa Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolodchikova nel 2006, prendendo il nome d'arte da una combinazione di nomi russi e da una delle sue ginnaste preferite, Elena Zamolodčikova.[9] Durante la creazione del suo personaggio drag, McCook ha dichiarato di essersi ispirato a "comici femminili e donne divertenti e interessanti come Tracy Ullman, Maria Bamford, Lana Del Rey [e] Amy Sedaris".[10] McCook ha dichiarato a Drag Race che l'aspetto russo del suo personaggio è stato ispirato da una professoressa che ha avuto mentre studiava al Massachusetts College of Art and Design, che "non usciva mai di casa senza una faccia piena di trucco [con] tacchi a spillo da 15 centimetri nella neve".[11] "McCook non ha origini russe, ma ha frequentato diversi corsi di lingua russa e ha usato una cassetta intitolata "Pronounce It Perfectly" per padroneggiare l'accento.[12] Oltre a parlare il russo, è in grado di parlare correntemente anche il francese ed è noto per parlare il giapponese e il portoghese.[13]

Nei panni di Katya, McCook ha condotto uno spettacolo mensile di drag show chiamato "Perestroika" al Jacques Cabaret.[14] Katya è diventata nota sulla scena drag locale di Boston per aver eseguito canzoni di artisti russi popolari come Alla Pugačëva, t.A.T.u. e Glukoza.

RuPaul's Drag Race modifica

Katya ha partecipato alle audizioni per il talent show RuPaul's Drag Race su Logo TV quattro volte prima di essere scelta per partecipare alla settima stagione.[15] La si vede infatti partecipare all'audizione per lo show già nell'episodio "Casting Extravaganza" della terza stagione. Nella sua stagione, Katya ha vinto due sfide prima di essere eliminata nell'undicesimo episodio, finendo al quinto posto dopo aver perso un lip-sync contro Kennedy Davenport. La decisione di eliminarla è stata controversa, poiché era molto popolare tra i telespettatori.[16] Durante la reunion della settimana stagione, è stata votata dai fan come "Miss Simpatia" (in inglese Miss Congeniality).
Il 16 maggio 2016, Katya è apparsa alla finale dell'ottava stagione di RuPaul's Drag Race per incoronare la prossima Miss Simpatia, Cynthia Lee Fontaine.

Il 17 giugno 2016 Katya è stata annunciata come una dei membri del cast della seconda stagione di RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars.[17] Si è piazzata tre volte tra i primi posti nel corso della stagione e alla fine si è classificata seconda, a parimerito con Detox.

Katya ha caricato diverse serie web sul suo canale YouTube, "welovekatya",[18] tra cui RuGRETs, RuFLECTIONS, Drag 101, Total RuCall e Irregardlessly Trish, l'ultima delle quali parla di una parrucchiera bostoniana che vive in un cassonetto. Katya improvvisa parte del suo materiale e scrive anche con un partner creativo, Avi Paul Weinstein.

Nel novembre 2015, Katya è apparsa nell'album Christmas Queens, cantando una versione modificata della canzone "Twelve Days of Christmas".[19] Katya compare anche nell'album Homemade Christmas di Trixie Mattel nella canzone "The Night Before Contact".[20]

Insieme alla collega Trixie Mattel, concorrente di Drag Race, Katya è co-conduttrice di una serie web sul canale YouTube World of Wonder chiamata UNHhhh,[21] che ha debuttato nel marzo 2016. Il 21 agosto 2017 è stato annunciato che Katya e Mattel avrebbero avuto un proprio show su Viceland, intitolato The Trixie & Katya Show, che ha debuttato il 15 novembre 2017.[22]

Katya ha avuto un ruolo nel film del 2018 L'uragano Bianca 2: dalla Russia con odio, diretto da Matt Kugelman e con Bianca Del Rio nel ruolo principale. Nel 2018 Katya è stata co-conduttrice di un podcast chiamato Whimsically Volatile con Craig MacNeil.[23] Nel novembre 2019 è stato annunciato nel podcast che Katya lascerà lo show.[24] Nell'autunno del 2018 Katya e Mattel hanno ripreso la loro serie web UNHhhh su WOWPresents Plus e su YouTube grazie alla popolarità e al successo generale dello show.

Nella primavera del 2019, Katya ha annunciato l'avvio del suo spettacolo comico itinerante "Help Me, I'm Dying". Il tour è stato filmato per uno speciale comico con lo stesso nome che è andato in onda su OutTV in Canada nell'ottobre 2019.[25] È stato disponibile on demand nel febbraio 2020 e trasmesso su Logo TV il 4 marzo 2020.[26] Nel novembre 2019, Katya e Mattel sono state co-conduttrici di un nuovo show sul canale YouTube di Netflix, intitolato I Like to Watch, in cui reagiscono a vari spettacoli su Netflix.[27] Nel giugno 2019, una giuria della rivista New York ha inserito Katya al 13° posto nella loro lista delle "drag queen più potenti d'America", una classifica di 100 ex concorrenti di Drag Race.[28]

Il 14 luglio 2020 ha pubblicato il suo primo libro, Trixie and Katya's Guide to Modern Womanhood (in italiano "La guida di Trixie e Katya alla femminilità moderna"),[29] pubblicato da Plume Books e scritto insieme alla concorrente di Drag Race Mattel, che ha debuttato al secondo posto nella classifica dei best seller del New York Times per "consigli, trucchi e varie".[30]

Nel 2020, Katya e la co-conduttrice Trixie Mattel hanno lanciato il podcast settimanale "The Bald and The Beautiful".[31] A ottobre Katya ha confermato che avrebbe pubblicato il suo EP di debutto Vampire Fitness il 13 novembre.[32] A dicembre è stato annunciato che Katya e Mattel avrebbero co-condotto la decima edizione degli Streamy Awards a Los Angeles.[33]

Nell'agosto 2021, Katya e Mattel hanno lanciato una newsletter di consigli Substack, Gooped,[34] che è andata avanti fino al luglio 2022.[35]

Vita privata modifica

Nel gennaio 2018 McCook aveva annunciato una pausa dalle drag per motivi di salute mentale e il suo tour comico nei panni di Katya, "Help Me, I'm Dying", è stato rinviato alla primavera del 2019.[36][37] Tornando su Twitter nel marzo 2018, McCook ha annunciato che il tour sarebbe stato probabilmente rinominato a causa della sua guarigione.[38]

Nel primo episodio di Whimsically Volatile del marzo 2018, McCook ha parlato in dettaglio della pausa. Ha descritto di aver subito un crollo psicotico dopo una ricaduta nella metanfetamina e di essere tornato brevemente a vivere con la sua famiglia in Massachusetts prima di entrare in un centro di riabilitazione in Arizona.[39]

In un episodio intitolato "Time....Again" della stagione 7 di UNHhhh Katya ha raccontato di essersi fatta i tatuaggi durante un episodio maniacale mentre era sotto l'effetto di droghe, ma di non essersi pentita di averli fatti.[40]
