Lo statunitense Jimmy Connors, dopo il terzo titolo ottenuto nel 1978 e le successive 3 semifinali consecutive, ritorna alla vittoria nello Slam che gli ha portato maggiori soddisfazioni battendo in finale dopo 3 ore e 9 minuti il cecoslovacco Ivan Lendl nella prima delle sue 8 finali consecutive che disputerà a Flushing Meadows per 6-3 6-2 4-6 6-4. Si tratta del 4° successo per Connors agli US Open e 7º torneo del Grande Slam della carriera. Con questo successo Jimmy ritorna ad essere il numero 1 della classifica ATP sopravanzando McEnroe e incassando un assegno di 90 000$; Lendl ne ha incassato uno di 45 000$.^[1]
