John Banner, nato Johann, (Stanislau, 28 gennaio 1910 – Vienna, 28 gennaio 1973) è stato un attore statunitense di origine austriaca, meglio conosciuto per il suo ruolo del sergente Schultz nella sit-com Hogan's Heroes (1965-1971).Template:Infobox person
Nei primi anni
Banner è nato da genitori ebrei a Stanislau, all'epoca in Austria-Ungheria (ora la città si chiama Ivano-Frankivsk ed è in Ucraina).
Ha studiato legge presso l'Università di Vienna, ma in seguito ha deciso, invece, di tentare la carriera di attore.
Nel 1938, quando si esibiva con una compagnia di recitazione in Svizzera, Adolf Hitler annette l'Austria alla Germania nazista. Banner allora emigrò negli Stati Uniti, dove imparò rapidamente l'inglese.
Seconda guerra mondiale
Nel 1942, Banner si arruolò nelle forze aeree dell'esercito degli Stati Uniti, seguì un addestramento di base ad Atlantic City e divenne un sergente di rifornimento. Ha anche posato per un poster di reclutamento, prima di acquisire la mole che l'avrebbe in seguito reso celebre nell'arte comica. È stato di servizio all'esercito fino al 1945.
Secondo l'attore Robert Clary di Hogan's Heroes, Banner ha perso gran parte della sua famiglia a causa dell'Olocausto.[1]
Recitazione
Broadway
Banner apparve a Broadway tre volte: in una rivista musicale intitolata From Vienna, che durò due mesi nel 1939, e in due commedie comiche: Pastoral, in cui ebbe un ruolo di primo piano ma che ebbe una breve durata (nel novembre 1939) e The Big Two, che si svolse nel gennaio 1947.
All'inizio della carriera, prima di diventare fluente in lingua inglese, Banner doveva imparare le sue battute foneticamente.
Film
Banner è apparso in più di 40 lungometraggi. Il suo primo ruolo accreditato è stato un capitano tedesco in Once Upon a Honeymoon (1942), con Cary Grant e Ginger Rogers. Ha anche interpretato un agente della Gestapo in Chetniks! The Fighting Guerrillas (1943) della 20th Century Fox.
Banner in seguito apprese che i membri della sua famiglia che erano rimasti a Vienna erano tutti morti nei campi di concentramento nazisti.[2]

Banner ha fatto più di 70 apparizioni televisive tra il 1950 e il 1970, tra cui The Lone Ranger (episodio "Damsels In Distress", 1950), Sky King (episodio in anteprima "Operation Urgent", 1952), Sheena, Queen of the Jungle ("The Renegades", 1955), Le avventure di Superman ("L'uomo che ha realizzato i sogni", 1957), Father Knows Best ("Brief Holiday", 1957), Mister Ed ("Ed the Artist", 1965), Thriller ("Portrait Without a Face", 1961), The Untouchables ("Takeover", 1962), My Sister Eileen, The Lucy Show, Perry Mason, The Partridge Family, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea ("Hot Line", 1964), Alias Smith e Jones, The Man from UNCLE ("The Neptune Affair", 1964) e Hazel ("The Investor", 1965).
Alla fine degli anni '50 interpretava il supervisore di Peter Tchaikovsky in una serie antologica per Disneyland sulla vita del compositore.
Nel 1953, ha avuto una piccola parte nel film di Kirk Douglas The Juggler, come testimone di un attacco a un poliziotto israeliano da parte di un sopravvissuto a un campo di concentramento.
Nel 1954 ha avuto un ruolo regolare interpretando "Bavarro" nella serie TV di fantascienza per bambini Rocky Jones, Space Ranger.
Due anni dopo, ha interpretato un direttore del treno nell'episodio "Condotta sicura" di Alfred Hitchcock Presents, apparendo con il futuro co-protagonista in Hogan's Heroes Werner Klemperer (il colonnello Klink), che interpretava una spia.
Nel corso della carriera, Banner ha interpretato i cattivi nazisti in diversi film successivi: il sindaco della città tedesca in The Young Lions (1958), Rudolf Höss in Operation Eichmann (1961) e Gregor Strasser in Hitler (1962).
L'anno prima della prima di Hogan's Heroes, Banner ha interpretato un soldato tedesco della seconda guerra mondiale in 36 Hours (1964), con James Garner. Sebbene fosse un ruolo serio in un dramma di guerra, Banner mostrava ancora quella natura affabile che divenne il suo tratto caratteriale distintivo in Hogan's Heroes.
Gli eroi di Hogan
La serie comica Hogan's Heroes, in cui Banner interpretava il sergente Hans Schultz, ha debuttato sulla rete televisiva CBS nel 1965.
Secondo Banner, prima di incontrare e sposare la moglie francese Christine, pesava 178 libbre (81 kg); ha affermato che la sua buona cucina è responsabile del suo aumento di peso fino a 260 libbre (120 kg), il che lo ha aiutato ad avere la parte.
Il personaggio di Schultz è un goffo e adorabile sergente nazista, in un campo di prigionia della seconda guerra mondiale. Il campo è utilizzato dai prigionieri come area di sosta segreta per il sabotaggio e la raccolta di informazioni. Schultz è sempre in debito con i prigionieri, che lo usano come pedina a vantaggio degli alleati per il loro lavoro di spionaggio ininterrotto.
Il suo obiettivo principale è evitare qualsiasi problema con i superiori, il che spesso lo porta a ignorare le attività clandestine dei prigionieri. Per quelle occasioni viene coniato lo slogan-tormentone "Non sento niente! Non vedo niente! Non so niente!", mutato poi in "Non so niente! Niente!"
Banner è stato amato non solo dagli spettatori, ma anche dai colleghi, come ricordato dai membri del cast durante il commento in DVD di Hogan's Heroes. In quanto ebreo, Banner difese il suo personaggio dicendo a TV Guide nel 1967 che "Schultz non è un nazista, ma il rappresentante di una sorta di bontà in ogni generazione."
Banner è apparso in quasi tutti gli episodi della serie, durata sei anni.
Nel 1968, durante la sit-com, Banner ha recitato insieme agli altri attori di Hogan's Heroes (Werner Klemperer, Leon Askin e Bob Crane) nella commedia sulla Guerra Fredda The Wicked Dreams of Paula Schultz, con Elke Sommer.
Dopo Hogan's Heroes
Dopo la fine di Hogan's Heroes nel 1971, Banner recitò nei panni dell'inetto gangster zio Latzi in una commedia televisiva di breve durata, The Chicago Teddy Bears.
La sua ultima apparizione come attore fu nell'episodio del 17 marzo 1972 di The Partridge Family. Si è poi ritirato in Francia con la sua seconda moglie, nata a Parigi.
Morte
Meno di un anno dopo essere tornato in Europa, mentre visitava gli amici a Vienna, Banner morì il giorno del suo 63° compleanno a seguito di un'emorragia addominale.[3]
