Betawiki: better support for your language in MediaWiki modifica
Dear community. I am writing to you to promote a special wiki called Betawiki. This wiki facilitates the localisation (l10n) of the MediaWiki interface. You may have changed many messages here to use your language in the interface, but if you would log in to for example the English language Wiktionary, you would not be able to use the interface as well translated as here. Infact, of the 1798 messages in the core of MediaWiki, 1658 messages have been translated (almost complete). Betawiki also supports the translation of messages of almost 80 extensions, with about 1050 messages (about 40% complete).
If you wish to contribute to better support of your language in MediaWiki, as well as for many MediaWiki extensions, please visit Betawiki, create an account and request translator priviledges. You can see the current status of localisation of your language on meta and do not forget to get in touch with others that may already be working on your language on Betawiki.
If you have any further questions, please let me know on my talk page on Betawiki. We will try and assist you as much as possible, for example by importing all messages from a local wiki for you to start with, if you so desire.
You can also find us on the Freenode IRC network in the channel #mediawiki-i18n where we would be happy to help you get started.

Hello, There is an ongoing argument in the [Hebrew wikipedia http://he.wikipedia.org] about the importance of the Siracusian painter Gaetano Tranchino. since he does not appear on any wiki, including the Italian, we presume he does not deserve to be included in the hebrew wikipedia. But one of our writers (who wrote the article about him) insists that he is well known in Italy and therefor deserve to have an article. Can your modern art experts relate to our question? For any further info, please contact him. As I mentioned, he says he can speak Italian, so you can ask in Italian. Or you could have a look at other wikis (you can speak English, so why not compare the article to the en-wp) and find differences. FYI I have updated this to use the latest features and fixes in the en version. Specifically it now works properly in Internet Explorer, handles New Pages properly, and caters for Single-Revision Deletion, if that available to Italian Administrators.
And it now works in all skins, so it is safe to put in Special:MyPage/common.js.

The LocalisationUpdate extension has gone live modifica
The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within 24 hours. Your localisations get into SVN from translatewiki.net typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.
The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner
What this means for you modifica
Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. In order to remove unnecessary duplication, all the messages that have a local localisation and are exactly the same as the system message will be removed. The question had appeared originally on a page of the Hungarian Wikipedia ("Tudakozó") where any of guests can put his question to the wiki staff about anything what an encyclopaedia editorial could answer by chance. Your team mate Aushulz has sent the result of his research, the result was that the word is probably having its origin in the name the town Quaregna in Piemonte. The questioner did not give any context, but he found possible a religious and historical affinity of this word. An other editor exposed her version that this word can be found in a fantastic world of science fiction, this might be the proper answer. I thought that's worth more attention, this happens sometimes.

Die Relevanz des Artikels sollte durch ihren Sieg beim Internationalen Songfestival von Vina del Mar in der Kategorie Folk gegeben sein.[3] Der User L736E hat den artikel jedoch mit der Behauptung gelöscht, dass es sich um einen Artikel zur Promotin handelt, ohne eine weiterführende Diskussion!! Ich gestehe ein, dass vielleicht in der Übersetzung Fehler orthografischer und grammatischer Art enthalten sind, diese rechtfertigen jedoch keine Löschung, sondern können durch einen Muttersprachler behoben werden. I'm doing my project into language processing and I'm using Wikipedia. I want to use several languages in the tests, included the one of this version. And since I need some articles to analyze I wanted to ask for your help. Precisely, some keywords I will explain now.
Actually what I am looking for is a list in your language with the names of those territories which represents an entity of speakers (therefore possible wikipedia contributors) of your language, the name its people or gentilic, and the name of the language (if it is the same language and it has a different name). These territories must be in practice independent from each others or at least be considered so by the speakers. This is the case of colonies, excolonies, other countries which historically speak the same language or minorities attached into the country next to yours.
For example, a list in english something like. "english", "england", "irish", "ireland", "scottish", "scotland", "british", "united_kingdom", "american", "united_states", "canada", "canadian", "australia", "australian", "new_zealand", "new_zealander". Probably there are some others which are not very big but I don't know cuz I'm not familiar.

I am Yosri from Malay Wikipedia. Recently I was informed by certain parties that MS Wiki need to delete any images tagged as Non-Commercial under Foundation Licensing policy. After I have done some studies, I realised that Wikipedia Foundations is moving towards allowing commercialises all images, as such they are acting on behalf of commercial company to require all images loaded with tagging Non-Commercial in all Wiki Project to be removed, including those loaded in local Wiki. You are only allowed to licenses your images under "free content", which specifically allows commercial reuse, example GDLF 1.2. Certain images is exempted under a very narrow EDP ("exemption doctrine policy") definition. If you all already aware about this, please ignore this comment. Voce Common Law e traduzioni al maschile modifica
Cara Ambasciata, sto consultando la pagina italiana sulla Common Law e leggo con stupore (ed enorme disappunto) la frase:
"Dal momento che i sostantivi dell'inglese moderno sono privi di genere grammaticale, nelle trattazioni italiane al sostantivo law si attribuisce convenzionalmente il genere maschile."
!!!????
Non solo non c'è logica: traducendo un termine inglese (neutro), abbiamo il corrispondendte italiano maschile o femminile, infatti non traduciamo, credo, Moon, come "luno" o "chair" come "sedio", giusto? ma luna e sedia.
Guarda caso Law è "legge" in italiano, quindi Common Law perché mai dovrebbe essere maschile? Ci viene spontaneo, mi pare, come italiane e italiani, pensare alla common law, la legge consuetudinaria, ma se vogliamo invece tradurre con diritto, sarà il diritto consuetudinario.
Quello che mi ha dato veramente fastidio non è tanto il non legare logicamente la parola Law alla sua traduzione italiana (femminile in questo caso (legge), ma avrebbe potuto essere maschile in un altro caso) bensì l'automaticità espressa nel ragionamenteo :
"dal momento che l'inglese è neutro, noi gli attribuiamo il maschile!!! " Così , a priori, senza neppure domandarsi se esiste un termine corrispettivo in italiano e di che genere sia?
Sono stata molto colpita. Spero questo atteggiamento e queste procedure verranno corrette.

Regarding Mio Mini Pony/My Little Pony, I see anything about the G4 cartoon My Little Pony: L'amicizia è magica (My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic) is put in the article titled Vola Mio Mini Pony, which is the Italian title for both G1 cartoons from 80s and My Little Pony Tales from 1992. I know all three series are related because they are based on the toy line (and all of them were broadcast on Italia 1), but that doesn't make Friendship Is Magic a direct successor of the other two cartoons. I heard Friendship Is Magic was partly inspired by 80s G1 cartoons, but those two, oh, all three (as well as G3's direct-to-video cartoons) are completely different from everything. (from characters, setting, location, continuity, etc.) So, the Vola Mio Mini Pony article should be split into these articles: Vola, Mio Mini Pony for the cartoons from 80s, Vola, Mio Mini Pony (serie televisiva 1992) for My Little Pony Tales, and My Little Pony: L'amicizia è magica for My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Wikimedia Foundation is getting ready to push out 1.19 to all the WMF-hosted wikis. As we finish wrapping up our code review, you can test the new version right now on beta.wmflabs.org. For more information, please read the release notes or the start of the final announcement.
The following are the areas that you will probably be most interested in:
- Faster loading of javascript files makes dependency tracking more important.
- New common*.css files usable by skins instead of having to copy piles of generic styles from MonoBook or Vector's css.
- The default user signature now contains a talk link in addition to the user link.
- Searching blocked usernames in block log is now clearer.
- Better timezone recognition in user preferences.
- Improved diff readability for colorblind people.
- The interwiki links table can now be accessed also when the interwiki cache is used (used in the API and the Interwiki extension).
- More gender support (for instance in logs and user lists).
- Language converter improved, e.g. it now works depending on the page content language.
- Time and number-formatting magic words also now depend on the page content language.
- Bidirectional support further improved after 1.18.
Report any problems on the labs beta wiki and we'll work to address them before they software is released to the production wikis.

Language support group for Italian modifica
The Wikimedia Foundation has brought together a new team of developers who are dedicated to language support. This team is to support all the languages and consequently it is not realistic to expect that the team members can provide proper support for your language. It is for this reason that we are looking for volunteers who will make up a language support team.
This language support team will be asked to provide us with information about their language. Such information may need to be provided either to us or on a website that we will indicate to you. Another activity will be to test software that will likely have an effect on the running of the MediaWiki software. We are looking for people who clearly identify their ability. Formal knowledge is definitely appreciated.
As much of the activity will be concentrated on translatewiki.net, it will be a plus when team members know how to localise at translatewiki.net.

As many of you are aware, the Wikimedia Board of Trustees recently initiated important changes in the way that money is being distributed within the Wikimedia movement. As part of this, a new community-led "Funds Dissemination Committee" (FDC) is currently being set up. Already in 2012-13, its recommendations will guide the decisions about the distribution of over 10 million US dollars among the Foundation, chapters and other eligible entities.
Now, seven capable, knowledgeable and trustworthy community members are sought to volunteer on the initial Funds Dissemination Committee. It is expected to take up its work in September. In addition, a community member is sought to be the Ombudsperson for the FDC process. If you are interested in joining the committee, read the call for volunteers. Nominations are planned to close on August 15.

- Come molti di voi sapranno, il Board of Trustees di Wikimedia ha recentemente dato avvio ad importanti cambiamenti del modo in cui il denaro viene distribuito all'interno del movimento di Wikimedia. Come parte di questi, si sta costituendo un nuovo Funds Dissemination Committee" (FDC, "comitato per la diffusione dei fondi") guidato dalla comunità. Già dal 2012-2013, le sue indicazioni guideranno le decisioni riguardanti la distribuzione di oltre 10 milioni di dollari Usa tra la Foundation, i chapter locali e le altre entità aventi diritto.
- Oggi cerchiamo sette membri della comunità, capaci e degni di fiducia, che costituiscano a titolo volontario il Funds Dissemination Committee iniziale, che prevediamo inizierà i propri lavori a settembre. Oltre a ciò, cerchiamo un membro della comunità che funga da Ombudsperson per il comitato. Se vi interessa partecipare, leggete l'appello ai volontari. Le candidature si chiuderanno il prossimo 15 agosto.

I came here to wikipedia, and it is apparently in italian. I cannot speak italian, but I can't figure out how to switch it back to english! Help?
